A Housewarming Gift Idea

My best friend moved into a new home a few weeks ago and I wanted to make her something special as a housewarming gift. Something unique that only should would have. We both share a love for coffee, so I decided to make something that could decorate her coffee station in her kitchen.

I started by designing the graphic on Inkscape. Thanks to Michelle from My Designs in the Chaos and her amazing design course, I was able to design exactly what I wanted.

Have you heard the phrase “I like my men, like I like my coffee…”? I decided to tweak it a little and relate it to my friend. So I came up with “I like my friends like I like my coffee, sweet and strong”. Mainly because that is what she is, sweet and strong. Also that how she takes her coffee. 😊

I used the font ‘Chocolate Candy Cups’ for the words “I like my friends like I like my coffee”. The ‘Babyhome’ font for “sweet &”. And lastly I used the ‘Watershed’ font for the word “Strong”.

I originally planned to do the reverse canvas technique for my gift, but I was unable to find a canvas in the desired size within the amount of time I had given myself to complete the project. Yes, I am a procrastinator. Like any professional procrastinator, I was able to work with what I had. I found a flat 8×10 canvas at Dollar Tree and had a stored 5×7 Dollar Tree frame in my home. I used the backing from the frame to trace the correct size onto the back of the flat canvas, then cut the canvas with a box cutter so it would fit perfectly in my frame.

I sent the svg file I created to Cricut Design Space for the final sizing and cut it out using heat transfer vinyl. This was a layered project so I used the sticky carrier tape from the htv to line everything up perfectly before pressing it to the canvas.

My Cricut Easy Press was set to 315 degrees. Each layer only required a few seconds of pressing before adding the next layer on. Then I pressed the entire project for about 25 seconds to make sure everything was stuck completely together. After the htv cooled, I reassembled the picture frame including the canvas.

My friend loved her housewarming gift and it looks great next to her Keurig. This project can be done so many ways. I think it would be a pretty decoration for a bedroom or a gallery wall. Any svg file and color could be used to suit your own décor. If you create something inspired by this diy please tag me on Instagram (@mylifeofstyle.kwg). I would love to see your creativity. 😊
