4 Easy Kid-Friendly New Year’s Eve Crafts

Hello everyone! Today I’m going to share with you four fun ideas for celebrating the new year with your kids. Almost all the materials I’m using are things that everyone has in their homes, especially if you have artsy little ones. These DIYs aren’t necessarily kid specific. They can be modified to have a good time with friends, roommates, or other adults.

The first DIY is a custom crown or tiara, because what is a holiday celebration without some awesome head gear! For this craft all you need are scissors, tape, construction paper and crayons. If you want to get really fancy you can absolutely use paint, markers, sticker, or gems like I did.

Start by picking what color construction paper you want to craft with. I chose white so I could use crayons to add in varying colors and my own personal design.

I laid my paper down so the longest part was side to side. I measured 1.5 inches up, made a mark, then made a second mark 1.5 inches from the first one. I folded the paper to create two pleats.

Next I tore, you can also cut, the pleats along the folds. These two long pieces of paper are what will be used for the band of the crown.

Next I made a very rough drawing for how I wanted my crown shaped, then cut that out.

I colored a random pattern onto the front of my crown and glued 3 small gems for a little added bling.

Next I taped the long strips I previously tore to the crown, one on each side.

Holding the crown up to my head, I wrapped the bands around and taped them together for a perfect fit.

Et viola! Super easy and very stylish.

The second DIY are fun treat poppers. These were really fun to make and personalize. For this one, you will need toilet paper rolls (wrapping paper or paper towel rolls that can be cut. Any tube really), tape, a small treat, ribbon, and something to wrap around the tube. For wrapping the tube, I did one in construction paper and 2 in pretty, decorative paper I found at Hobby Lobby. You could also use wrapping paper or a couple layers of tissue paper.

I picked out some small treats for my poppers. Ghiradelli chocolates, Starbursts, and kid’s jewelry. Some other filler ideas are small matchbox cars, hand written notes, or a small baggie of puffs cereal for a baby. I think small liquor bottles would fit inside the tube as well if you want to make more adult themed poppers. That would be really fun.

After picking out my paper, I lined it up with the cardboard tube, leaving plenty of excess paper on both ends. I put a small piece of tape to attach the paper to the tube, then rolled them together and taped the paper in place.

On one end I gently scrunched the paper closed at the bottom of the tube, then gently twisted. Using a ribbon, I tied it around the paper making sure it wouldn’t come open.

Using the open end, I filled the tube with little treats, then followed the same process of closing the end.

The poppers with decorative paper, I left ‘as is’ because they were already pretty. The popper with the construction paper was a little boring in my opinion, so I used metallic markers from Dollar Tree to decorate the paper. This is another place where you could be creative. Glitter is always fun. Let your child get involved by having them draw pictures on the paper you plan to use or decorate it with stickers before wrapping the treats.  That would be a sweet personal touch.

For the third celebration craft, I made a ‘Happy New Year’ banner. Again, I used construction paper, something we always have in our house. I also used a permanent marker, tape, and thin yarn.

I took some measurements, drew some guidelines, and created what is supposed to be a triangle template. I got as close as I could. 😊 I folded my construction paper in half width ways and used binder clips to hold everything together while I cut.

I thought this would be an easy way to cut every color at one time. While it was easy, it left the edges jagged. I like the way it turned out. Just know it was not intentional. Save your scraps. Using the permanent marker, I spelled out ‘Happy New Year!’ one letter per triangle. Letter stickers, stencils, or using a die-cut machine are also great ways to make your letters.

I didn’t decorate my triangles beforehand, but this is another fun way to get the family involved. Everyone could take a triangle and color or draw their own decorations. Stickers, glitter or paint would also be a great option here. I always tell my girls to use their creative license and let their imagination go wild when they decorate.

To hang my celebration bunting, I used a hole punch to make two holes in each triangle. I thread the yarn through each hole to connect each word, and used rolled tape to hang the banner on the wall.

Did you save your paper scraps from your banner? I did, and I made one last celebration DIY. This one is not for the faint of heart. I made… a confetti popper. To be 100% honest, I’m still debating if we will use this. Maybe if I can talk my kids into vacuuming. This popper, like the other crafts, is super easy to make. You will need another cardboard tube, paper to wrap around it, tape, and a balloon.

First measure your paper to fit the length of your cardboard tube. Cut it out so there is enough to wrap around the tube completely. Cut off the top of your balloon (the part you blow into) so it will easily fit around one end of the tube. Stretch the neck of the balloon around the tube and tape it in place. Wrap your decorative paper around the tube and taped portion of the balloon.

Now, here is where the paper comes in. Use a whole punch to cut out a bunch of confetti. Obviously, you can buy confetti. But punching out three-thousand little dots gives your hands a great workout. 😊

However you choose to acquire your confetti, load it into the open portion of your tube.

When you are ready, pull the balloon back and release it quickly to watch the confetti fly. Now do you understand why I’m not sure if we will use this. Maybe once just for the fun of it.

I hope you enjoyed these DIYS and they have inspired you to get a little creative for your own New Year celebration. I know this holiday will look a lot different then previous years, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use our imaginations and creativity to make it fun. 😊
